Over the last several weeks the Calgary Police Service has noticed that an unusually high number of Break & Enters are occurring within the Mount Pleasant area. There are two types of occurrences happening.

1) Unforced entries in to the rear detached  garages. This means that the man door or the overhead door of the garage has been left unlocked or inadvertently left open.

2) Forced entries to garages, where the criminals are prying or kicking the doors in order to gain access.

The first type is very easily remedied-  this accounts for almost  70% of the incidents occurring

a) PLEASE LOCK YOUR DOORS, this includes your garage, house and cars.

b) Don’t leave anything of value inside your vehicle. We are finding that people tend to leave wallets, extra car keys, cell phones, purses and garage door openers inside their car, (that you forgot to lock),  parked on the street or driveway or even inside the garage The theft of any of these items will give someone access to your home, garage, your car, banking information and identity. Etc. etc., etc. ….

c) make sure that your garage overhead door closes completely after exiting and before driving off.

YOU are your best defense against this every happening to you.

The second, 2) is a little harder to solve;  The solution to this is being vigilant and watching out for your neighbour’s. Kicking in a garage door creates noise.

a) If you hear strange noises coming from yours or your neighbour’s house, go and check on it.

b) You as residents know which vehicles belong on your street and in your alleyways. If you see a strange vehicle parked behind your house, go out and check on it. 99% of the time this vehicle will be doing something legitimate. It’s the 1% we are looking for.

c) As community residents you also know what is “ normal ” for your street and community. If you see a house or persons that doesn’t  fit in with the “normal” in the neighbourhood, start a conversation with your neighbor and see what they have noticed.

d)  If you have concerns about a person or house please send Cst. Gord Denison and e-mail outlining the issues and location.

Let’s all work together in making our neighbourhood a safer place.
